Question:

Hi ppl, I’m (24, m) thinking about switching from Paxil (20mg/day) to Effexor-XR coz I have side-effects like probs getting an erection, beeing sleepy all day and getting to sleep at night. Erection can be solved with Viagra 25, sleeping problems with Stilnoc. I’m taking Paxil since 10 months, it’s really working well beside of the s-e. So, here r my questions: 1. How long does it take Effexor to work.    (I know that it might not work, since Prozac had no effect) 2. What dose should I use for depression? 3. Did anybody did that before and has any tips? Thx in advance. — Have A Nice Day Peter ICQ-UIN:  1494438       Homepage: http://www.p-loeffler.de Billiger Telefonieren? http://blitztarif.de

Hi, there.  My current med regimen consists of 400mg tegretol, 25mg of topamax, and 37.5mg of effexor.  I’ve been on effexor for a couple of months and it’s my favorite.  I’ve went up to 150mg before and at that dosage, I get a little lethargic.  (I’m on two other mood stabilizers, though.)  So that probably contributes to my somnolence.  Anyway, here’s my answers: 1. Some people see results immediately; others see results in a week. However, it’s always a good idea to give your body at least six weeks to see how it will work. 2. I’m doing okay at 37.5mg with my epilepsy meds.  My pdoc tells me that most people get relief at 75mg.  However, you can go up to 300mg if your still depressed.  In extreme cases you can go up to 375mg.  It is also important to note that many people have a raise in blood pressure when hitting the higher doses.  (About 150mg according to documentation.) Hope this helps a little. Jeremy

Hya Peter I’m 30, female, so there is a difference to start with! ;) Sorry you have been having problems with Paxil.  I have never been on Paxil so I can’t comment on the drug at all. I am on 300mg of effexor just now.  I started on 75mg and gradually increased the dosage.  I think it started working quite quickly, although I am also on flupenthixol, which although an anti-psychotic, is actually a fast-acting anti-depressant. I expect that you would start on either 37.5 or 75mg and then it would be increased if necessary.  Different people react to different dosages, so it’s trial and error to be honest.  Dont increase your dose unless you have talked it over with your GP or your psych. Effexor has been beneficial to me and I am now living life again as I should be and I can see a future, something that has been lacking in my life for too many years.  I hope it affects you in the same way :) Good luck with the effexor. lisa xxx
